Calvin
was an old man who was famous as a person who patiently and diligently greet
everyone with a smile and a very closely handshake. His legs were limp from a
bullet penetrated in the Japanese colonial period. Calvin lived in the prone
area of rampant crime and drug trafficking. 80-year-old man worked as gardener
and caretaker of a church.
On a
day when watering the church’s garden, he was suddenly visited by several gang
members or thugs in that area. “Do you want water?” Calvin asked calmly. Most
of the young men, tattooed and grim-looking answered, “Yes of course” Calvin
handed the hose, but unexpectedly they caught Calvin arm and dropped it. After Calvin fallen, the thugs
took his wallet and watch, and then they run away. Calvin tried to get up, but
he fallen again. When he was still lying the pastor of the church came to help
him. “Calvin, are you okay? Are you hurt? The pastor asked. “No, I am fine”.
They were just people who were marginalized and neglected that could someday
returned to the right path, “Calvin said
as he wiped the tears from his forehead and returned to continue watering the
garden. A few days later the thugs had
come again and repeat the same act. Calvin did not take the fight, he even
offered water and drinking well. They then mocked and laughed the old man.
A year
later while doing her regular job, Calvin was struck the presence of thugs.
“Don’t be fear, Sir, today we will not harm and took you away”, said one of thugs
with a polite greeting and handing him a bag gently. What’s this? Calvin asked
in amazement. “That’s all stuff and wallet complete with all the money in it,”
I returned back, he said. “I did not believe it and cannot understand, why now
can be the good guy?” Calvin asked. With faces downcast and embarrased the
young man replied, “We’ve got a valuable lesson from the old man. We came to
apologize for harming and hurting good people like you. We wonder why every
time we harm and rob your possession, you are not fighting, even kindly. You
are not hostile and hate us even though we were hurt and harm you. You continue
to show your love for us the bad guys. “We wanted to tell the truth, that we
were never able to sleep after robbing stuff and hurt you, so we decided to
give it back”. Eventually Calvin’s patience led to repentance in the hearts of
thugs. Love can destroy Hate and Crime.
With
Love we are able to bring the people who fall into the valley of the shadow
back to the right path. Continuously love given sincerely at that time will
soften the hard heart, like drops of water continuously will be able to erode
and destroy the hard rocks. “Love can
turn enemies to be friends”.
